Explore the higher routes in a special Picos and Cantabrian Mountains Hiking Tour
An exciting new hiking tour for 2018 brings enthusiastic walkers back to northern Spain to explore the best of the higher routes offered by the region’s dramatic landscapes.
The neighbouring regions of the well-known Picos de Europa and lesser known Cantabrian Mountains are close to each other, but couldn’t be more different. Formed out of different geological events, the limestone and sandstone mountain ranges sit within a stone’s throw of each other and offer the walking enthusiast a treasure chest of routes to choose from.
Far and Wild’s 2018 Explorer tour will be based between the two ranges and is aimed at walkers with some prior European walking experience. This tour will include a visit to Cabana Veronica, built out of an old US warplane, and an overnight in Refugio Jeremosa, arguably the most beautifully situated of all mountain huts in the Picos.
In the Cantabrian range, we will summit Peña Prieta (2,539m) and spend one night in a bivvy shelter by the beautiful Curavacas Lake, under the highest peak in the cordillera.
Although neighbouring mountain ranges, the complexion of the walking experience between the Picos and the Cordillera varies. The former is much drier and lunar-like at a higher level. The latter is fecund and wetter, supporting rich green pastures, widespread lichen and a native bear population (who like their privacy!).
The Explorer Tour is designed to make the best experience out of a week in the region and may result in drop-offs and pick-ups by mini-bus to get the best walks in each day- thus is a slightly higher cost than our Picos Discovery Tour later in the year.
You require a good level of fitness and at least one prior experience of European walking above 1,000m is recommended, though not essential if you have walked extensively in Ireland or the UK. There will be a variety of potential walks to chose from and participants in this tour are expected to have the experience to work within their comfort zone and make informed decisions with the group on the route choice for each day.
An Irish and local Spanish guide will accompany the tour and all accommodation will be locally based from family run guesthouses with the exception of an overnight in a mountain refuge and a bivvy night. The Picos & Cantabrian Mountain hiking tour, or Explorer Tour is a must for walking enthusiasts looking for something new.
