Dates: 12th and 13th October 2024

Sat 12 Oct: ‘The Eco in Altnaheglish’ is a Moderate looped walk starting at top of the Glen and completing an entire circuit via Altnaheglish. The walk looks at the evidence of the natural eco-system at work within a water catchment area which houses both conifer and broadleaf woodland. It asks how the ‘sense of place’ will change with function, or how an ecosystem is used, and how to restore the original function of an ecosystem to support life. Eco in Altnaheglish is a moderate 10km walk on double track with some limited minor track or cross country sections. Exploring the steep, ancient woodland glen of Banagher, expect some limited ascents and descents on the valley sides, while the main course of the walk is along the forest or tarmaced track in the main Glen. Please wear hiking boots or sturdy footwear that protects your ankles, as well as rainwear according to the forecast. Tea/Coffee and snacks will be served at the walk start- end point subject to prevailing weather.

Sun 13 Oct: ‘The Gift of the Uplands’ is a Challenging looped walk on Mullaghneaney. It starts on the Glenadra Road and takes a looped route on forest trail and over open hillside (off-trail). The walk looks at how upland areas support life in the valleys below, being rainfall catchments and the home of a variety of plant and animal species necessary for keeping nature in balance. This walk is for competent hikers with prior experience of walking upland routes. The route takes in the summit of Mullaghneaney – Mullach nIodadh and surrounding hills. It starts on double track through conifer woodland and moves into open country above the tree-line for the majority of the day’s walk. Expect it to be rough and wet underfoot and dress accordingly in hiking boots, gaiters (if desired) and rainwear. Tea/Coffee and snacks served at the start/end point of the walk subject to weather. Distance 12km

Lorcan McBride

Director

I have been making the outdoors both my work and passion for over 10 years now- and every activity brings new people, new places, and new discoveries. What keeps me smiling is discovering the depth of Ireland’s natural heritage- and how people take to it so positively. I have been working with community leaders in Aotearoa/New Zealand for years to understand our own indigenous identity.
