In 2019 our hiking tour in the Picos de Europa National Park was the most successful to date. We enjoyed the accompaniment of a local Spanish guide with excellent English, we trod some new routes, and got a lovely temperate weather window to boot.

We hooked up with our Spanish guide Rosana LaGuia in our base in Hotel Nevandi, Espinama– a family run guesthouse we know well in the Picos foot-hills.

We do a circuit of 6 days spectacular walking and come back to Espinama for our final night, such are the generous portions and warm hospitality. Along the way of course you make friends….time spent on the trail is a great place to meet people. The hours pass quickly in conversation and taking in the panoramas as they come.

The routes in the Picos work well for walkers of moderate fitness level. There is enough to increase your fitness over the course of the week, and all on way-marked trails. And nothing technical.

We were lucky to have a musician in the group in 2019. So it wasn’t uncommon to hear the sound of the whistle or Irish flute drifting over the hill during a lunch stop. Or the sound of laughter and craic!
