Our ‘New for 2025’ little bundle of wonderful outdoor experiences is a series of short hikes to help people learn ‘cúpla focal Gaeilge – a few words of Irish’- as they accompany a small group of people on a few interesting walking routes.

Aimed at beginner or improver level in terms of both Irish language-learning and walking, each ‘What’s the Irish for ‘Hiking’? walk will be approximately 2hrs long. Each walk is along an Easy (under 4km) route of interest relating to the Irish language and snippets of ‘fun-facts’ about the area.

If you are a learner, a complete beginner or an improver, you will enjoy the craic and company on this short series of walks. You do not need to speak Irish to attend but have a willingness to try your first ‘focal’ or two among people at the same level as yourself. The emphasis is on fun and easy, conversational learning. Small phrases and turns of phrase will be incorporated in each tour to help improve you basic conversational Irish, and you should come away being able to have simple interactions with other people ‘as Gaeilge’.

So don’t be afraid (ná eagla ort)! These walks are a way of slipping into the vernacular Irish without the classroom bit, and with plenty of fresh air to encourage the laughter also! Come along and give it a go, you never know who you will meet and what you will learn. There is an increase in learning Irish from all sections of our community which is a great way to celebrate our cultural relationships.

I have been making the outdoors both my work and passion for over 10 years now- and every activity brings new people, new places, and new discoveries. What keeps me smiling is discovering the depth of Ireland’s natural heritage- and how people take to it so positively. I have been working with community leaders in Aotearoa/New Zealand for years to understand our own indigenous identity.
