Picos de Europa & Somiedo, the joint destinations for our ‘Wild in Spain’ Hiking Tour, are part of one iconic mountain range in northern Spain. The Camino de Santiago passes through the region which rises to 2,650m from a coastline dotted with picturesque small towns and villages.

Far and Wild have been leading European walking holidays in the Picos since 2015, working with family-run guest houses and local guides alongside Irish leaders.

“Our return to the Picos in 2024 will be something new and exciting – the Picos are breath-taking for people used to walking in Ireland and Great Britain. We are doubly thrilled to be visiting Somiedo in 2024, inspired by what we know about the wild-life and culture in this region”, says Lawrence, Far and Wild’s Director. “We work with a selection of reputable Spanish guesthouses and have many years experience running successful overseas tours. The warmth of local people, the climate, pan-celtic history and unique wild-life of the region makes for an immersive and fulfilling hiking holiday break”.

The tour will start with a pick-up at Santander airport, followed by a 2hr transfer to the heart of the Picos. After a warm welcome, overnight stay in a local family-run guest house and traditional evening meal, the tour departs on a 7 day circuit of the most spectacular locations, vistas and trails in the central and western Massifs.

“The heart of the experience is a hike to Refugio Uriellu at 2,000 metres, a comfy hut tucked under a massive Tor rock, Naranjo de Bulnes which is a mecca for climbers. The Tor lights up in the sunset and morning sunrise, giving the location its name- the orange rock of Bulnes”.

Far and Wild know the region well and works closely with both Irish and Spanish guides. This allows for great routes that match your ability and reveal the dramatic beauty that is quintessential to the Picos.

The ‘Wild in Spain’ Hiking Tour is suitable for people of average fitness who have an interest in walking and already actively walk in their spare time. Walks last approximately 4-6 hours per day, depending on the route and weather conditions. The tour will comprise 3 days in the Picos and 3 days in Somiedo.

Scenery on the route is spectacular and as good as any big European Walk. The Cares Gorge comprises one of the day’s hiking and is a stunning natural feature to see up close. As a limestone upland landscape, the entire mountain range has been transformed from a sea bed to a close-knit chain of dramatic mountains over millennia. People and commercial development have had to accommodate the environment and find ways to adapt. Tourism is important to the region but still the Picos are quiet and very well kept compared to other walking destinations in Europe.

I have been making the outdoors both my work and passion for over 10 years now- and every activity brings new people, new places, and new discoveries. What keeps me smiling is discovering the depth of Ireland’s natural heritage- and how people take to it so positively. I have been working with community leaders in Aotearoa/New Zealand for years to understand our own indigenous identity.
